Arched Limestone Mantel on a Raised Stone Hearth

An uncarved reclaimed limestone fireplace mantel that works entirely through mass and line. A stepped cornice shelf breaks forward over blocked end piers, a plain frieze runs beneath it, and a wide round arch is turned in bold molded voussoirs springing from square imposts. The whole surround stands on a deep raised hearth of large ashlar blocks. The stone is mottled pale grey with cloudy darker drifts and softly rounded arrises. Suited to a great room, lodge, entrance hall, country house or contemporary renovation that wants antique limestone without ornament.
