Limestone Chimneypiece with Carved Lion Frieze
A broad reclaimed limestone chimneypiece whose frieze is carved with two facing lions set either side of a fluted urn, closed at each end by deep scrolled volutes within a shaped panel. The thick cornice shelf projects well forward, and heavy shaped corbels step the lintel down onto blocked jambs. A herringbone firebox sits behind, with a long single slab hearth in front. The stone is bleached and crusted, with mortar traces and worn relief. Suited to a great room, loggia, entrance hall, country estate or restoration where the mantel is the architecture.
