Limestone Mantel with Interlaced Strapwork Frieze
A reclaimed limestone fireplace mantel whose frieze is cut with a continuous run of interlaced strapwork, looping bands weaving around open quatrefoil flowers inside a raised border. A twisted cable molding separates the frieze from the thick cornice shelf above. The jambs are tapered legs built from stacked limestone blocks with open joints, each with a shaped shoulder beneath the lintel. The surface is dry, pitted and streaked in tan and grey, with clear tooling marks. Suited to a living room, library, country house or restoration project that wants visibly old carved stone.
